Yesterday we went up to Tepic, the capitol of this little state. It's not a regular tourist destination, so it was very different in flavor from Puerto Vallarta. We were the only gringos wherever we went, and it was funny to see some of the people stare at us - especially the kids - as if we were aliens from another planet. Must have seemed really weird to them to see people with such light skin, and me with my half-white, half-dark hair -
We made a special point to visit the Huichol Indian stands there. The Huichol are a tribe of indeginous folk who live up on the mountains outside Tepic. Their lands have been sliced away from them to the point that there is literally no where for them to live anymore if they continue to expand. So a contingent broke off and made a colony in Tepic, and they sit on the main square very day with their little tables, selling their goods.
They wear bright, hand-woven, embroidered dress; and they have not just tourist trinkets but also some of their famous yarn paintings which were originally depictions of peyote hallucinations or visions. I found several I loved, and had to leave lots more....
We then went to Wal-Mart (!) for our chocolate stash replenishment. I'm so glad I used EFT to resolve my old chocolate addiction - I no longer utterly crave it anymore, so when I do have it it's a special treat. So we got lots of dark chocolate bars and some bitter choloate to make some of my Absolutely Devastating Fudge for the holidays.
It was a relief to get back to the dusty, sleepy back-in-time ambience of San Blas after the hot bus trip up and down the winding roads with no shoulders and push-push traffic.
The place we are staying - Qunita California, if you ever want to have a good stay with good folks at a good price - has a nice little courtyard area where folks gather occasionally throughtout the day, and I always awake to people sitting out under the big ficus tree laughing and joking as they drink their morning brews.
We watched a DVD the other night that was a Frontline show - it was called the Persuaders. If you want to take a very revealing look at how we are all massaged every day into buying, this is a must-see.
I'll write more later - the day is awaiting and I'm off to paint.
