This morning when I walked outside to water my little garden - my little bit of paradise! - I noticed a scent on the air I couldn't quite place - it seemed very familiar, but the name of the plant escaped my memory.
As I did my rounds from one plant to the next, I looked carefully to see if there was a new one that was blooming. Yes! The guava!
Now, I'm not a big guava fan - as a matter of fact, when I was young and camping out on Maui and eating only guavas and rice for weeks on end, I guess you might say I developed a particularly intense dislike of the fruit.
So when I "inherited" a tiny, scraggly, near-death guava bush when I moved into this place, I almost just threw it in the compost pile and gave up on it.
But no, I couldn't - one sign of life in a plant and I'll do practically anything to doctor it back to life again. I trimmed it back to its very nubs, watched and watered it. It didn't take too long to get well - guavas are very hardy. Guavas like to grow any which way and have no real pattern you can tame, like taking an apple and making it grow up a wall, flat, but I started trimming it to look kind of like a grown-up bonsai tree..
I trim this now-lovely guava bush almost once a week, it grows so fast. And it is really beautiful - now I love it! Ain't that something? And guess who was making that wonderful fragrance this mornning - right! In a couple weeks, little baby fruits will start to form - and soon again, the birds will have lovely yellow fruits to eat - because I ain't eating them!
As I write this, I'm keenly aware of a little voice in my head saying, how i this like your life, Angela? How have you almost let die hidden talents or ideas or projects and ignored them until they lay shriveled up and croaking with thirst - only to revive them and give them new life and beauty? The possibility of fragrance and blooming and fruition?
Look inside yourself now - is there some part of you that you've missed, walked all over, hidden in a closet or stashed in a back alley of your mind or little cranny in your heart? Do yourself a big favor and pull it out - carefully, now - it's not used to the bright light and loud sounds of daily life yet - and nurture it into something grand. Trim it just right to let its personality come through - something big, unique, beautiful and fruitful that we all can now enjoy. You'll be so glad you did!
